10Q's for Ania Smelskaya

I first noticed Ania Smelskaya several years ago when she started working with Douglas McMaster at Silo London as a sommelier. I've followed her on social media, where she kindly...

...offered assistance with a project of mine. Ania is passionate about sustainability and climate issues, shaping her project choices. Besides her passion for wine and that industry, Ania also works as photographer. We finally had the chance to meet for coffee, and I’m certain we’ll see more of Ania in the future. Here is Ania’s 10 Questions.

Interview by Jonathan Soriano

Name: Ania Smelskaya
City: Brighton, UK
Occupation: Sommelier, wine consultant, and photographer
Spirit animal: A dolphin—curious, social, and full of playful energy.

What do you do for Recreation?
Recreation for me means finding joy in life’s creative and sensory pleasures. I love exploring new wines/drinks, taking photos that capture unfiltered emotion, or going for a swim by the coast. It’s all about connection—whether with nature, people, or art.

If you were to do something other than what you do for a living today, what would that be?
I’d be a sustainability consultant for hospitality businesses. Helping people run their spaces more sustainably is something I feel deeply passionate about. It ties into my love for zero-waste principles and the desire to make a meaningful impact.

What was the last gift you got for yourself?
A lens I had been eyeing for years—it’s perfect for my photography work and was such a satisfying splurge.

What was the last gift somebody gave you?
A hand-drawn, framed drawing from my friend Danielle before she returned to her homeland, Australia. It was such a heartfelt gesture and something I’ll always treasure—it’s like having a piece of her warmth and creativity with me.

What is your biggest vice, and how do you deal with it?
My biggest vice is sometimes doubting myself or struggling with a lack of confidence, especially as a woman in a profession that’s traditionally male-dominated. I often find myself questioning my abilities. To navigate this, I use mindfulness practices like breathwork and affirmations. Reminding myself that progress is better than perfection helps me keep moving forward with more self-compassion.

How do you navigate through difficult situations?
With a positive outlook and by focusing on what’s within my control. I practice mindfulness, take deep breaths, and try to notice the small moments of joy that life offers. "The Art of noticing".

Name one of your favourite people in the world and why this person is one of them?
It has to be my friend Honey Spencer. She has a warmth, kindness, and light that draws everyone in. She’s the type of person who makes you feel seen and cared for, no matter what. She inspires me constantly.

What do you do to stay/get in shape?
I like to mix things up with weight training, Pilates, and yoga. For me, it’s not just about staying fit but also taking care of my mental health. I also incorporate fasting, sauna sessions, and cold-water swimming into my routine—it’s a blend of strengthening and restorative practices.

What was your proudest moment and why?
One of my proudest moments was working at Silo, experimenting with a sustainable wine program, and explaining the concept of zero waste. It felt deeply purposeful, like I was contributing to something bigger than myself. Also, whenever I capture raw, genuine emotion through photography, it fills me with pride—it’s so rewarding to see beauty and authenticity come through my lens.

Which city is cooking you the best meal and where?
While I’ve enjoyed many fine dining experiences, I adore warm, unpretentious neighbourhood restaurants. For me, Sune in London stands out. The food is consistently fantastic, the lighting makes the space feel so inviting, and the service is easily the best I’ve ever experienced. They also offer some really interesting drinks, which just elevate the whole experience—it’s the kind of place that makes you feel properly looked after.
